Larry Krantz Flute Pages: Important Info For FLUTE Members - DATA
* SUBSCRIBING TO FLUTE *

Send an email with the following in the body of the message:

* ADDRESSES TO REMEMBER *

To send to the ENTIRE LIST use:
        FLUTE@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

To send to the list OWNERS ONLY use:
        FLUTE-REQUEST@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

To send COMMANDS to listserv use:
        LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

* UNSUBSCRIBING FROM FLUTE *

To unsubscribe from FLUTE please send email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu with the following line in the email body

UNSUB FLUTE

* SENDING EMAIL TO FLUTE *

To send a posting to the FLUTE list, send email to

flute@listserv.syr.edu

Do it just like sending email to a single person- except Listserv will distribute your posting to all FLUTE members.

All new members will be automatically set to REVIEW. This means that each message must be approved before delivery to the entire list. If there are no problems then that initial message will be approved and the REVIEW setting will be changed to NOREVIEW by the list owners. At that point all postings to the list will go directly to the entire membership. It is not possible to intercept or stop a message once it has been sent.

A high proportion of new members may be using the Microsoft Outlook Express email software. Unfortunately the default settings for this software are not suitable for sending email to FLUTE and the software settings should be amended as follows :-

1) Get the 1st page of outlook express mail system on screen
2) Click mouse on "Tools" option on Top Bar
3) Click mouse on "options"
4) Click Mouse on "Send" Tab
5) At "Mail Sending Format", click mouse on the "Plain Text" dot-in-circle option
6) Click mouse on "settings" adjacent to the above plain text dot-in-circle
7) Change The number at the "Automatically wrap text at" box to 70 if not already at that figure. The default figure is usually 80 and this is too high.

For all other email software ensure that the settings are for plain text and not html/rich text and that line lengths do not exceed 70 characters.

* LIST COMMANDS *

1. TO POST TO ENTIRE LIST send to FLUTE@listserv.syr.edu

2. LIST COMMANDS

To use one of the commands listed below, send email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu with the command in the body of your message

q flute Find out details of your subscription
SET flute DIGEST Receive FLUTE in digest form
SET flute MAIL Receive FLUTE in individual postings
SET flute NOMAIL Receive no messages temporarily

INDEX FLUTE Listing of FLUTE LOGS

3. QUESTIONS ABOUT TECHNICAL MATTERS (i.e., why I don't receive mail anymore, my email address has changed and..., how do I ..., etc.)

send email to flute-request@listserv.syr.edu

* CHANGING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS *

In most cases the following procedure will work:

You will need to subscribe FROM YOUR NEW ADDRESS by sending the message:

If you can still send from your old address then FROM YOUR OLD ADDRESS send the message:

If you can not send from your old address then when your new subscription is complete let us know at flute-request@listserv.syr.edu and we will delete your old address for you. Please remember to remind us what your old address was so that we delete the correct one.

If you have further problems then please don't hesitate to write to us at flute-request@listserv.syr.edu

* Subject Line Identification *

If you would like to clearly identify every FLUTE posting making it easy to spot in your INBOX, you can set your subscription to SUBJECThdr. With this setting, Listserv automatically inserts the text [FLUTE] at the beginning of each subject line (similar to the subject line for this message). For those who do spam filtering, this provides text that is easy to allow past the filter.

You can set your sub that way by sending the command:

SET FLUTE SUBJECTHDR

Send to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

Make sure to send that command from the same email address that you are subscribed from and that the message is sent using text only format.

* NETIQUETTE ISSUES *

When sending messages to a list, please keep the following suggestions in mind. They will help keep the list user-friendly for everyone.

* USE OF QUOTATION *

When replying to another message, try to refrain from quoting entire messages. Quoting just a line or two from the previous message is often enough to make your point clear. Over use of quotation can create long and tedious messages for list members to download and read, it serves to make daily DIGEST and log files more bulky.

Private reminders about quotation are routinely sent to members who over quote. Subscribers who receive three or more reminders about overuse of quotation will have their subscriptions set to review until the list managers are satisfied that guidelines will be followed.

* MESSAGE CONTENT ISSUES *

The list owners request that message content be confined to flutes, flute playing, and flute centric activities (piccolos included). General music topics are not appropriate (e.g., music theory, teaching methodologies, fund raising) unless they are about flutes. Messages about list operation such as using list commands or computer "how to" should go to the owners, as they are not flute related. When necessary, the owners will post any such information. Comments and questions about business deal problems, even if they involve flutes, are not appropriate for the list. Jokes (not flute related), personal chit chat or requests for email addresses and phone numbers are not appropriate. NFA Convention Organizers are requested to limit the number of list requests for volunteers for future conventions to no more than one (1) message per month during the four (4) months leading up to the convention.

We encourage free and open discussion within our subject area. If in doubt, please contact the owners at:

flute-request@listserv.syr.edu.

That address is the fastest way to get to us and we will respond to your question as quickly as possible.

* POSTING COPYRIGHT MATERIAL TO FLUTE *

FLUTE participants benefit when members share information, so we encourage this avenue of participation. However, reproduction of entire copyrighted articles (or large sections) without the owner's permission may lead to fair use problems. Instead, it's better to post a URL so that members may read the article at source.

Long URL's can cause problems, so we recommend using a free service like Shrink-A-Link or Tiny URL to create shorter URLs for use in list postings. Links to both of those services can be found in the FLUTE List Pages

* ANONYMOUS POSTINGS *

The membership of the FLUTE list ranges from young students to the most seasoned and well-known professional performers. We suggest that list members compose their messages with the awareness that *anyone* could be listening. We would like to remind you to use diplomacy and good taste especially when naming specific individuals. To our knowledge, no one has yet been seriously offended by such postings and we would like this atmosphere to continue. We certainly want to encourage free sharing of ideas and opinions, including disagreements on issues and negative comments when you have something sincerely negative to say, for example if you want to report on a concert or CD that you didn't like. The kinds of comments we hope will stay off the list are those containing hurtful, insulting, or demeaning remarks.

Some list members prefer to remain completely anonymous, while others choose to sign their contributions with an alias. There are many reasons why list members may choose anonymity and they have every right to do so. You may come to the false conclusion that "so and so" is not on the list and will therefore not hear your words. However, "so and so" may indeed be listening. If you would not make a particular comment to the person in the flesh, then maybe that comment is not appropriate for the list.

We desire a warm, friendly, positive forum that is beneficial and pleasant for all of our valued members. We hope that this posting is interpreted in the good-natured and positive manner that we would like everyone on the list to display.

* MESSAGES DO NOT APPEAR *

Because postings reach the list with no problems 99.99% of the time, FLUTE is configured to *not* include a copy to the sender. The theory is that if you wrote it then you probably don't need a copy. If you don't trust the system or would like to see your posts on FLUTE, send the message:

You may think that receiving a copy of your own posting is confirmation that everyone on the list has gotten a copy. Not so. There is NO reasonable way to know when someone received your posting, or whether they read it.

* MAIL AND VACATIONS *

You can temporarily suspend mail (and remain subscribed) by the command:   SET FLUTE NOMAIL

to resume mail, use:   SET FLUTE MAIL (if you prefer individual posts)

or: SET FLUTE DIGEST (if you prefer digest)

Send these commands to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU
Remove all signatures and put nothing else in the body of the message.

* MISSING PERSONS MESSAGES*

From time to time list members post messages on FLUTE looking for long lost friends, former teachers, or other flute players. Messages of that nature should NOT be posted to the entire list.

We do not give out email addresses without permission but we have, in the past, been useful in assisting contact between list members. If you are looking for a specific individual then please ask us at
FLUTE-REQUEST@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU rather than posting to the entire list.

* RETRIEVING LOGS *

#1. Send the message: INDEX FLUTE
To: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

You will soon be sent a list of all available logs on the system.

#2. Send the message: GET FLUTE LOGNAME
To: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

*NOTE: remove signatures and place nothing else in the body of all messages sent to listserv.

Each log will contain at least one week's worth of messages and not just separate daily digests so these files are quite large.

* SEARCHING FLUTE LOGS *

* SEARCH ON THE NET *
[http://listserv.syr.edu/archives/flute.html]

* HOW TO SEARCH USING EMAIL*

To search for the term "open hole" in the FLUTE list you would send a message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU and simply type:

Search 'open hole' in FLUTE

That message would result in the following being returned from listserv:

Item # Date Time Recs Subject
------ ---- ---- ---- -------
000189 96/03/29 09:17 39 Pellerite book and Cooper scale
000306 96/03/31 20:07 16 Re: Second Hand flute
000491 96/04/04 15:30 115 Re: PVC Pipe Flute

-cut-

To order a copy of these postings, send the following command:

GETPOST FLUTE 189
GETPOST FLUTE 306
GETPOST FLUTE 491
etc.

* NARROWING THE EMAIL SEARCH *

It is possible to add further parameters to your search in order to narrow it. You can limit a search by date with a "since. . . " predicate. Likewise, you can limit by sender and/or by the subject line with a "where . . ." predicate. For instance:

Search 'open hole' in FLUTE since 94/01/01
Search 'open hole' in FLUTE where sender contains 'XXX@XXXXXX.XXX'
Search * in FLUTE where sender is XXX@XXXXXX.XXX
Search * in FLUTE since 97/01/01 where subject contains 'open hole'

are all valid search commands that will (hopefully) dramatically reduce the number of entries returned to you.

* WHEN TO SEARCH USING EMAIL*

Searching the FLUTE LOGS is very time consuming so we would ask that list members run searches ONLY BETWEEN THE HOURS of 11pm and 11am Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

eg. 11pm GMT (London)
= 6pm on the North American east coast
= 3pm on the North American west coast
= 12 Midnight through most of Western Europe
= 6am or 7am in Australia

Since there are so many time zones represented by the list membership we will leave it to you to figure out the suitable times according to your distance from GMT. If you REALLY need to search during the day in Syracuse, NY, it's ok, but try to avoid it.

* COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY | ITEMS FOR SALE *

FLUTE is not a venue for commercial activity.

APPROPRIATE POSTINGS

INAPPROPRIATE POSTINGS/ACTIVITIES (examples)
  • MULTIPLE postings about products, services, auction(s), recordings - any items for sale
  • price increases, sales or most feature changes
  • enlisting list members to facilitate commercial product discussions
  • commercial text other than a single URL in email signature
  • MULTIPLE postings about classes, workshops, and private teaching.
  • comments and questions about business deal problems, even if they involve flutes, are not appropriate for the list.

Questions about the appropriateness of any posting may be sent to the list management team at FLUTE-REQUEST@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

We're glad to help make your posting meet FLUTE guidelines, if at all possible (we've worked with many posters in the past).

Posters of inappropriate postings will be notified privately; there is no need for public discussion. Please send comments about policy or postings privately to the owners; we will attempt to fairly deal with all concerns. Repeated violations of list policy will result in removal from the list.

FLUTE does maintain a file containing information about vendors of flute materials. Vendors who are interested in being included in the FLUTE VENDORS file should send an email to flute request@listserv.syr.edu containing:

1. Company Name
2. Contact Information
3. Brief description of services offered (8 to 10 lines maximum)

To get a copy of the FLUTE VENDORS file send the message:

GET FLUTE.VENDORS
To: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

* COPYRIGHT, ARCHIVAL, FAIR USE ISSUES *

By joining FLUTE, you agree to have any postings to the list archived (they are currently stored on listserv.syr.edu), and that postings may be used as a part of normal list activity (e.g., they may be included in someone's response to your post). This does not imply any assignment of rights under copyright law; it is also understood that copyright law governs fair use of material posted to the FLUTE list. If you cannot agree to these provisions, please un subscribe from the list. If you have a signature line limiting use of your postings, you may NOT belong to FLUTE and should un subscribe yourself (an example: your signature says that your postings may not be archived or re posted).

The FLUTE Management Team requests that FLUTE list members refrain from re-posting list messages on other lists without first obtaining the approval of the author of the message. List members who engage in re-posting without permission from the authors will be removed from the FLUTE list.

Disclaimer: this is not a legal statement (we're not lawyers), but meant to notify FLUTE participants that list operation implies certain activities and that you agree to them. Use of FLUTE content without permission will be grounds for removal from FLUTE.

* EMAIL ADDRESS HARVESTING *

Email address harvesting is often done for the purpose of creating bulk emailing for various enterprises. Please know that we (listowners) do NOT condone such activities on FLUTE and have done what is possible to prevent that kind of activity. The FLUTE membership list is NOT available to anyone except the list owners. Email addresses of list members are not given out without permission.

If you have been bothered by bulk emailings and suspect that they might be a direct result of your participation on FLUTE then please DON'T HESITATE to write to us at FLUTE-REQUEST@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. Bulk mailers are quite often quick to change their practices when they become aware that their emailings are offensive to many.

* POLICY ON FLAMING *

Messages deemed by the list management team to be inflammatory, demeaning, or defamatory will not be tolerated. We have no intention to censor discussion or disagreement but insulting personal and/or business attacks and public fighting are not welcome here.

Normal Procedures:

1. List management team will post a reminder about flaming to the list when deemed necessary.

2. Members involved in flaming situations may have their subscriptions set to REVIEW. Subscriptions may be returned to NOREVIEW when a flaming situation ends.

3. If the flaming problem persists then members involved will be removed from the list.

Unusual circumstances may require special action. We will do what is necessary to keep our forum friendly.

When public intervention is deemed appropriate by the list management team the list will be converted to a MODERATED format. UNMODERATED format will return when the list managers have determined that the flaming thread has been stopped.

In the interest of 'fairness to all', we request that anyone who feels unfairly attacked should write to flute-request@listserv.syr.edu to discuss the possibility of a one time public rebuttal.

* UNANSWERED QUESTIONS and RECURRING SUBJECTS *

Once in a while questions posed by some of our younger members have gone unanswered by the list membership. We would like to suggest that if your list question has been sent to the list and NOT answered within a few days that you write to us at flute-request@listserv.syr.edu (list owners address) so that we might provide the answer or point you in the right direction to find an answer.

The FLUTE list has been in a constant state of growth since its inception. Many members have been with the list since the very first day and have had the opportunity to observe and participate with all of the usual list subjects as they have come up. A great many topics are of the recurring type and do tend to become redundant for long standing members. FLUTE has been compiling FLUTE files with the intent of providing answers to a great many of the basic and more popular questions. The second edition of the FLUTE FAQ contains a wealth of information that has been provided by many list members.

* English As A Second Language *

If you are one of our members for whom English is a second language, please know that we welcome your contributions to the list. You are invited and encouraged to participate in the discussions even though your use of the English language may be less than perfect. Your ideas, questions, and the content of your messages are what is valuable and important.

Because the vast majority of our list members are English speaking, we must discourage the use of non-English languages on the list.

* NFA Seeking Convention Volunteers *

Many messages are posted each year about upcoming NFA conventions. FLUTE is extremely pleased to be able to provide a venue where convention messages can be shared both before and after the event. Announcing specific convention events, asking questions about the convention, and posting experiences after the event are extremely important and very appropriate for FLUTE. We encourage the continuation of those types of messages.

Each year a group of individuals from the NFA are given the task of recruiting volunteers to assist with the many jobs that need to be done at the convention. Those organizers have a large and difficult job and are always appreciative when list members volunteer to help. FLUTE would like to assist as much as possible in that regard. Due to the relatively high number of "seeking volunteer" messages that have been posted to the list in the past we have developed a general policy about such messages.

We ask that NFA Convention Organizers limit the number of list requests for volunteers for future conventions to no more than one (1) message per month during the four (4) months leading up to the convention.

Thanks to all NFA convention organizers for your understanding about this issue. If you have questions or concerns about this matter then please don't hesitate to write to us at flute-request@listserv.syr.edu

* INAPPROPRIATE PRIVATE RESPONSES *

We've occasionally been informed that list members sometimes receive unkind, and in some cases harassing or flaming, private emails as a result of their activity on the FLUTE list.

If at any time you receive a private message that you feel is unfair, harassing, accusatory, or extremely negative in other ways, we want you to know that the list managers are open to hearing complaints about such inappropriate emails.

Posting a public message does imply some degree of risk. People may strongly disagree with your ideas and seek you out individually through email, especially when they know that public flaming is not tolerated on FLUTE. We aren't responsible for what happens off the list but we would take your complaint very seriously and might also be able to help in some way, especially if we get more than one complaint about a specific person. Your name and information will be kept in strictest confidence. By letting us know your situation, you may also help prevent other list members from experiencing the same problem.

We especially hope that any list member who receives a private email that is hateful, derogatory, or insulting, will not let that deter him or her from further posting. We do not want those situations to occur, and will do our best to support you. Please write to us at if it seems like the right thing to do.

* FLUTE MANAGEMENT TEAM *

Larry Krantz (list owner): is a full time professional musician who has been active as a classical, jazz, & commercial performer and teacher for the past 30 years. After a 20 year stint as woodwind doubler and college/university teacher he has chosen to focus entirely on flute and non-jazz styles of performance. Larry currently lives in Abbotsford on the Canadian west coast.

Nelson Pardee (list owner): is a computer programmer at Syracuse University. Though he does not play the flute, he has enjoyed listening to the "growing up" of his daughter's flute playing and to many fine players. He treasures his many flute playing friends, including those met electronically through Flute.

John Rayworth (list monitor): is an amateur flute player who has taken early retirement from his career as a Civil Engineer and Computer manager in order that he might concentrate his energies on flute teaching and practicing. He plays with local amateur groups and gives the occasional local recital. He lives in North West England (UK) near the City of Carlisle and the Lake District.

These are the people who do the work that makes the list a reality.

Larry, Nelson, & John do list administration and formulate list policy; assistance and reminders will come from these people (or folks they explicitly designate). List members should disregard any monitoring messages that do not appear to come from any of these people. Because we're a team, all non-routine matters are discussed between appropriate team members.

If you have questions about the FLUTE list, please email the owners Larry Krantz, Nelson Pardee, Helen Spielman, and John Rayworth at:

flute-request@listserv.syr.edu

We strive to keep the list free for talk about flute, so please send suggestions, concerns, non-flute issues, and questions about list operation to flute-request. We will do all we can to make your time on FLUTE informative and enjoyable.
