FLUTE went on the air on March 19, 1996. The list has experienced considerable growth since the first day of activity. From a modest
but respectable launch with 456 members the list has grown to 2,657 subscribers from 37 countries. As of November 19, 2009 there
were 124,207 messages posted to the list. Although FLUTE goes through periods of varying activity the average number of messages
has been 23 per day.
The FLUTE list managers have taken as much care as possible to ensure that the subscriber list is as accurate as possible and as free
of un-wanted and un-used subscriptions as it can be. If you are subscribed to FLUTE and in need of help removing an unwanted
subscription then please write to us at FLUTE-REQUEST@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. A list manager is always manning the helm (except on
weekends) and ready to assist.
Multiple Subscriptions - Multiple subscriptions are kept to a minimum. Twice each year all subscribers who have more than one
subscription are contacted privately by the management team to see if multiple subscriptions are required. Each time that housekeeping
duty is done there are many un-used subscriptions detected and removed. The process is time consuming but necessary.
Broken Email Addresses - Listserv automatically tracks most (not all) broken email addresses. After a prescribed number of error
messages from an email address Listserv automatically deletes that subscription. The average number of broken email addresses being
tracked is about 19 per day. Approximately 25 subscribers with broken email addresses are automatically deleted each month.
Listserv Probe - Listserv automatically sends a probe to subscribers who have not posted to the list over a prescribed period of time. If
the subscriber does not respond to that probe or if the probe fails then the subscription is automatically deleted by Listserv. The Listserv
probe is an extremely effective way to identify subscribers who have turned off their mail and have forgotten to unsubscribe from the list.
