PHOTOGRAPH AND NOTES ON WOOD FLUTE

The above flute is a Rudall Carte Boehm System flute, fitted with a thinned, silver lined headjoint

The serial Number is 7839

More detailed photographs showing the headjoint, Keywork and Tenon Joints are available

Wood flutes were popular in the UK up to the early 60's and there are still some eminent flute players who prefer them. There seems to be a renewed popularity for them at present and there are still some skilled flutemakers around who make them. The UK flute maker Robert Bigio is one fine example.

A modern wood flute should exhibit many of the characteristics common to moderm metal flutes, such as a modern scale and embouchure design

They ought to be superior to the older model of instrument, though the few remaining good examples are now sought after.

The above photograph and notes are as accurate as my knowledge on the subject permits.
