PHOTOGRAPH AND NOTES ON POINTED/PLAIN KEYWORK

The first of the above photographs shows pointed keywork on the non fingered keys. This keywork is on a Rudall carte Wood flute but is commonly found on all silver flutes.

The second photograph shows plain keywork on all keys on a solid silver Muramatsu Flute.

There is no clear guidance for the choice of plain or pointed keys.

Most high quality hand made flutes have pointed keywork as do most quality flutes from other sources. However there are very high quality instruments around with plain keywork.

There is no obvious advantage in either type.

The above photograph and notes are as accurate as my knowledge on the subject permits.
