The above two photographs clearly show the hinge mechanism on the curved actuating lever. The First photo shows the actuating lever in the on position and the second with it in the off position .
The advantage of this arrangement is that if the player is aware of a passage containing trills etc which may be disabled or made difficult by the Split E mechanism then he/she can turn it off at a convenient point before that passage and then re-enable it at a convenient point after the problem passage.
The disadvantage of this arrangement is that the hinge mechanism is considered a relatively weak feature liable to breakage - particularly if used roughly and often
